10 Ways to Wear a Plaid Shirt

I love this long camel coatigan/duster! It might look familiar from my post about 6 ways to style it here. I styled it recently with this amazing $11 plaid shirt (alternate option here) which got me thinking that plaid shirts are really one of my most versatile items in my closet! I love how easy they are to wear so many ways. Today I thought it would be fun to share 10 ways to wear a plaid shirt. Though I am styling a Christmas red plaid below, these ideas work for any plaid shirt you might have with possible minor alterations: buffalo plaid, blue and green plaid, a fall toned plaid, etc. You can see ideas for plaids other than this in previous posts here and here if you are interested.

With a Camel Layer

As seen before, I love this combo! I had to take some photos with my camel duster. It is by Line & Dot from Shopbop, and I really love it! If you’re in the market for anything like it, I highly recommend it. The make some really good sweaters and knits overall.

Tied Around Your Waist

A really fun way to wear a plaid shirt is tied around your waist. Though you can absolutely do this with jeans, I love to do it with leggings to add a little coverage. It helps define your waist and just makes the overall outfit fun! I love wearing either my Spanx leather leggings or my budget friendly Walmart pair seen here. I thought this striped sweater was a fun print mix.

Wear Your Plaid Shirt as a Layer

I love making a plaid shirt a layer itself! If you aren’t a fan of the shacket trend for the bulk, try this! Or if it is a little cool, this makes a great light layer.

A Plaid Shirt is Great Alone!

Next up in my 10 ways to wear a plaid shirt is a no brainer – just wear the shirt as it is! A plaid shirt is pretty great just as it is by itself. Truly one of my all time favorite prints!

Under a Sweater

One of my favorite ways to totally change up a shirt is to layer it under a sweater! I paired my plaid with a grey sweater and jeans but you could just as easily do a trendy sweater vest or work pants and remix this even further! I love doing this with other blouses I have in my closet too and did it often when I was working in an office to get more wear out of my closet.

With a Black Layer and/or Vest

I added a black puffer vest, but I also have a camel colored soft vest that I love with a red plaid. It’s fun to try layering plaid with basically everything you have! My exact black vest is old, but here is a really similar one I own in another color. I can vouch for it being a good buy too!

All Black Combo

I thought it was fun to try an all black combo with my favorite black moto jacket. I’ve had mine for years and cannot wear it out!! I highly recommend if you are on the lookout. So glad they still make it. Same with my boots but I found a similar option for you here.

Try White Denim

I loved mixing it up and adding my white jeans and jean jacket! This combo feels lighter and fun. These are my favorite white jeans I have ever owned and on sale – size down!

Dress it Up With Black Pants

I loved these velvet joggers! You could totally dress them down with a t-shirt and sneakers, but I loved the idea of making them feel Christmasy with heels. They are super comfy and have a fun gathered band at the bottom and waist.

Try a Skirt
