If you are a regular reader, you may have noticed something changed a little this week. I wanted to address briefly why I stopped using Disqus for blog comments. SomeΒ time ago, I switched to it preferring it for ease, the way it nested replies, and the way it emailed comments to me as an administrator. I also actually liked it as a commenter on other blogs.
Why I Stopped Using Disqus for Blog Comments
Recently I started noticing some spammy looking sponsored links and photos in a large block above my comments. Russ is actually the one who pointed it out to me. I do not currently run ads on my blog, though I am looking into it as a revenue source right now. I was baffled as to why these ads would be showing up on my blog without my permission. In a quest to figure out what they were and where they were coming from, I searched my blog for settings that might have changed or a plug-in that might be causing them. I also noticed a few ads within my comments.
Not putting two and two together, I posted a photo of the ads and asked on a Facebook group I am a member of. To my surprise, everyone told me Disqus had recently rolled out ads within their comments! You now have to PAY to have them removed, and they put them on my blog without asking me. If you use Disqus and do not have it on your blog yet, I believe they are rolling it out slowly. It will come.
I immediately began the process of backing up my comments and removing Disqus. All of the people in the group said they loved the regular WordPress comment feature and actually have ended up with more comments on their blog because users do not have to log in to comment. If you are a blogger, what are your thoughts? If you are a non-blogger and reader, have you noticed? Do you have a preference? I’d love to hear your thoughts int he comments!
Outfit Details – Suede Jacket on Sale
A few words about this outfit. Is this dress not so gorgeous?! It comes in plus and petite too which I always appreciate. My exact jacket is on sale in several colors! I also have the tan in the BLANKNYC version which is also on sale here and here. It’s a great investment. I’ve had mine for several seasons and always get a lot of wear out of it.

I am a blogger and this comment type is also OK for me.
Disqus is better; there might be another solution to remove ads I think.
Disqus is convenient if you have an account, but that’s so shady that they put ads without even notifying you!! WordPress comments are fine π
Love the dress by the way! Looks super cute with those boots π

I too reflected over those ads when I saw them here as that sort of ” spam ads” doesn’t feel like you at all! I think wordpress comment section works more than fine and is as simple as it gets – truly! Xx

Oh no! I love the ease of Disqus but I don’t want ads! I am on WordPress. Can you share some advice on backing up comments and switching over?
I have had Disqus for four years and never had a problem, I find it so much easier than WordPress as you can edit spammy comments like the big one above at the top of your comments haha xx

Oh my goodness I was literally JUST about to add disqus to my blog haha – I get tired of having to have people enter in all of their customized information every time they want to leave a comment. Maybe I’ll try the wordpress comments instead. Thanks for sharing!

I donβt have WordPress but I really love the way blog comments are moderated. I think this way is much easier, although Disqus didnβt bother me much. How do you like WordPress Amy Ann? I really want to move away from blogger which is so antiquated but Iβm nervous itβll be too daunting
I had seen the ads on your blog, but didn’t think twice about them since I just scrolled past. I switched to disqus a few months ago when the built in commenting system stopped notifying me of comments through blogger. Now I have heard of a fix, but never went back just because of all the hassle. Many times with blogger you can’t back up your comments so most of my old posts have all their comments erased. It’s all such a pain. Good to know about the issues you’ve been having though. I liked that disqus alerted me when I had a comment back and allowed me to comment back easily. It’s so disappointing this is the direction they are going. I’ll definitely be changing soon.
That kind of stinks that you were getting spammy ads! LOVE this entire look! Your dress is so feminine and pairs terrifically with your grey moto jacket!

I use disqus and had no idea they were doing that! I love the ease of their comment system, but if they are going have ads on my site, I’m going to have to find another alternative too. I’m not on word press so my options might be harder! π

It makes complete sense to change to WordPress! I wouldn’t want unwanted ads popping up that I don’t authorize.

Wow!! So interesting! I had no idea. So far, I haven’t had any ads on mine but I will watch closely! How did you go about backing up your comments??

That’s so interesting Amy. How do you backup your comments…maybe you should have a blog post about that too. The only reason I changed to Disqus is because when I reply to comments, that person gets the email telling them. Before, they never knew that I replied.

I had no idea why were doing that but I guess they are going with the subscription based train now too. I was wondering what had happened to your comments settings. Thanks for sharing.
For awhile, I was considering using Disquis. I think it is awful that they did that. And I’ve been using the wordpress one, and haven’t had any issues at all! Also for Ads, I do have a network that I use and I love them because I have complete control on where and how many ads (so it is not spammy). Let me know if you want to know more!

oh wow thank you for this, I will work on getting disqus off my site promptly. You look gorgeous Amy.

That’s horrible Disqus makes you pay. I don’t use it just because I didn’t want my replies to people on the blog as some things I discuss with people are private but I like that it has worked for many and makes it easy to comment but paying for a comment service is wrong. This works just fine and you look so cute!
I use WordPress comments and love that system! Much better than paying to remove ads!
I used disqus and normal wordpress blogging commenting system, but find that disqus just works best for me!
