70s Style & Social Media Struggles

July 29, 2015

I’m loving the 70s style that is cropping up in fashion lately. Jean skirts, bell bottoms, platforms, off the shoulder tops – bring it on. I first showed you this jean skirt a couple weeks ago paired with stripes and heels (here). This skirt is only $12. I mean, you just cannot beat that. These a-line button front skirts are a big trend right now. I won’t lie, I want the white denim version and the suede version. Shein has them at such great prices compared to some I have seen which makes you feel like you can justify trying the trend. Today I am mixing it up with this amazing and affordable embroidered floral off the shoulder top from Lookbook (same company as my blush top from last week) and these awesome gladiator sandals. I love these because they are not low ankle or full knee-high. They are the midi of gladiator sandals if you will. I ordered them from Choies. If you’re considering them, I usually wear an 8.5 or 9 and went with the 9. They are a perfect fit.

Lately I have been struggling with social media. I am smart enough to know I shouldn’t compare my everyday with everyone else’s highlight reel. That adage has gotten enough airtime to be familiar, but it’s easier said than done. Isn’t it? I often feel like everyone is living cooler lives than me, and when I finally do something cool, I can’t even get the right angle on the shot to share. Anyone else? In the name of transparency, in case you’re comparing to my highlight reel, my life is pretty ordinary. I hate that I have been tempted to forget that my ordinary isn’t also amazing. Because the truth is my ordinary is awesome. I love my husband. I have stellar friends and family. I’ll tell you, infertility treatment hasn’t been a walk in the park though, and I haven’t even been going through the big guns like IVF. If that’s you, hats off. You have a friend here. It’s hard to highlight reel menopause at 29: hot flashes, and all the emotional and physical side effects that come with changes in hormones. There have been times it has caused me to question my faith. Now that I am on the other side of that feeling, I am thankful to say God is still faithful, and I am stronger because of it. I guess I just share this to say, social media is tough. And I’ve been having a tough time with it. So when I share outfit photos and coffee shop pictures, there is more to the story. There always is. I hope you know that.

It’s so easy to get caught up in the world of social media. Some people’s lives look so glamorous and carefree, but it’s just a vignette. Sometimes it may not be a true reflection of reality. That reminds me of this truly tragic article I read a few months ago: http://espn.go.com/espn/feature/story/_/id/12833146/instagram-account-university-pennsylvania-runner-showed-only-part-story

On a more positive note, I’m also loving the 70s trend! The denim skirt looks too cute on you πŸ™‚

It’s hard to deal with social media sometimes. We are all guilty of showing off only the best parts of life and then believing that everyone else’s best parts are their everyday. Sometimes I just need to take a day off from instagram, I get so overwhelmed!

Sorry to hear about your speed bump in the road to baby, but I know that you will keep your faith and become a wonderful mother.

I do love the 70`s look too and you really nailed it perfectly! I just adore that top! I think you are doing wonderfully on social media and I think the best is to not compare ourselves to anyone else! You should be proud of yourself and just keep being you!

I say it all the time and I’ll say it again Amy, I love ur sense of style and always leave with so much outfit inspiration when I read ur posts! I recently ordered a dress from Shein, but it wasn’t close to what the picture looked like, so I was pretty disappointed. I’ll definitely give them another try though.

I can totally relate to you in many ways when it comes to social media. Sometimes I’m in the moment and want to share the perfect photo, but I’m so picky with how the shot gets presented. I need to stop being so hard on myself. Thanks for sharing this Amy – Glad I can connect with you a bit more personal level, thanks for being so honest. Love that about people xoxo

That off the shoulder top is so cute! I’m glad the 70s style is making its appearance in today’s trends too. I definitely understand how you feel about the social media thing. I always find myself comparing or thinking other peoples’ lives are so much cooler than mine… There have been a few times where someone has said to me, “Your life looks so exciting!” and I was shocked! I guess we forget that we are really blessed to live the lives we do πŸ™‚ Good luck with your infertility treatments.. I can’t even imagine what you’re going through! Praying for you <3 xoxo Alexis

I love the print of this crop top and you look amazing! I know I’ve also had issues comparing myself to others on social media too as sometimes I feel like my life is very ordinary. But then again, like you said, I have so much to be grateful for in my life that I should just live in the moment and if no good pictures come of it, at least I have it in my memory. Thanks for all your honesty and best of luck with the fertility treatments! Xoxo.

It is hard to go on IG and see all these beautiful photos, but you never know how perfect everyones life is and just be glad you aren’t spending hours staging the perfect photo anyway! πŸ™‚ I will pray for you and your infertility problems. My husband and I went through this when trying for one (my other two are from a previous marriage) and I chickened out when they said IVF was the only way. Its A LOT. I still regret it some days, but it was the best decision for us as a couple. Altho, I know my husband wishes he could have had a child his own. Life can really be a bummer sometimes! Sorry if I shared too much!

First, you look amazing! I am LOVING all things 70’s too, I am convinced I was born in the wrong generation!

Second, trust me people only see what you want them to see. I understand your struggle at the same time though. When I find myself comparing I remind myself that I don’t show people the dog clean up I do or at times repetitive work life and it all evens out!

Cute outfit, I really love the sandals! I’m still looking for a pair like that! As for your social media concerns, please know that what you see on social media does not reflect real life. People only show a small part of their lives on there. And only the best parts of course. You don’t see the everyday boring stuff. But do you honestly think all these people have such super exciting lives and don’t have a dull moment in their day? Of course not.

Loving those sandals so much! Social media is definitely tough, and I often compare myself even though I know I shouldn’t. Thinking of you with everything you’re going through!
