I recently snagged this $18 grey sweatshirt dress from Walmart, and I love it! It’s so easy and fun to wear, features pockets, and is perfect for spring and summer. I am wearing the XS as it is a roomy style. I would recommend sizing down unless you are larger chested. Today I wanted to share some inspiration on how to style a sweatshirt dress. It’s such a great blank canvas to wear so many ways. I have 8 to share with you!
How to Style a Sweatshirt Dress – Option 1: Add a Layer
The easiest and most obvious choice when it comes to how to style a sweatshirt dress is to add a layer. My first four examples all feature different outer layers. Depending on your climate and temps, you could always add tights and another heavier coat on top of these. Here are some options:
- Denim jacket and booties
- White denim jacket and white tall boots
- Faux leather jacket and black ankle boots
- Cardigan and mules
How to Style a Sweatshirt Dress – Option 2: Get Creative with Your Shoes and Accessories
During the warmer months, you don’t need ay extra layers! The dress stands on it’s own and just needs cute shoes and accessories. Consider a cute hat, fun sneakers, my favorite summer Tory Burch sandals, or a mom friendly bag.
How to Style a Sweatshirt Dress – Option 2: Mix it Up!
I loved getting creative here! Instead of wearing shirts as usual, have some fun and make them part of your look. Tie your flannel high around your waist to create a more flattering shape. Feeling ambitious? Try to match your sneakers! Or grab your favorite graphic tee and knot it over your dress. I love the challenge of using what you have to make one piece feel so different!

Look at your sweet little Valentine! She’s getting so big!
A sweatshirt dress is truly a blank canvas and so versatile. I love all the ways you have styled it.
You have a joyful sense of style and know what looks good on you. Although I can’t imagine what would not. I’m 68 – way outside your demographic, but your fashion and creativity translate well. I get many ideas from you that I can interpret for my own look. I’m a decades older girl, but will always love pretty and feminine clothes. Plus you and your girls are darling. Look forward to each new post. P.S. Particularly love how you show one piece many charming ways.
So versatile – I think the leather jacket is my favorite styling.
I do love how you styled your sweatshirt dress. In the past, Sweatshirt Dresses have been a huge favorite of mine. So easy to wear.
