Building a Closet You Love: Classic Pieces Every Wardrobe Needs

July 8, 2019

I’m back with my third post in the series about building a closet you love. This has been really fun! You can catch post one, statement pieces you need, and post two, investment pieces worth the splurge. Today we are talking about classic pieces every wardrobe needs. I am going to try to talk in categories and then break it down by season as well. I hope that will keep things organized and make this post helpful no matter the season.

Classic Shoes Every Wardrobe Needs

Summer Flat Sandals

In every closet, there should be one pair of classic flat sandals that can be worn with a variety of outfits. Depending on your personal taste these might look different. I have have one white pair with studs that I have worn a ton. On first thought, they don’t look super classic but two seasons in they are one of my most worn shoes because they go with everything. Pick something that works for your wardrobe and lifestyle.

A Cute Wedge

I think a cute wedge sandal will go with basically every outfit you need to dress up a little. From date night to baby shower, a wedge is a classic.

Heeled Sandal

I recommend having a neutral and black heeled sandal for dresses, jeans, and more. These never go out of style and can take you from the fanciest black tie event to edgy date night in no time.

Winter Shoes

Ankle Boots

Ankle boots are my all time favorite shoe ever. I can never stop buying them and seriously have a problem!! My most popular blog post ever is about how to wear ankle boots with jeans, and you can see it here if interested. I think you need a flat and heeled version in colored options. But I did just say I have a problem. 😉

Nude Pump

A nude pump is the heeled sandals winter equivalent. It’s a classic that is always in style and always a good choice!

Stylish Loafer or Slide

I bought a leopard and white loafer last year and wore them non-stop! Whether yours has a back or not or is just a regular flat vs a loafer style, you need a winter flat option.

Coats and Jackets

If you read my investment pieces post, then you know I recommend a quality winter coat which I also think is a classic in any wardrobe. I recommend a grey one because grey can work with a brown or black outfit. I also wear my faux leather moto jacket and suede moto jacket probably more than any outerwear in my closet! Truly my favorite things I own. I’ve had both of mine for years.

I know so many people would say a trench coat in this type post, but I have not found that I wear a trench coat much. I do love a good black blazer for different occasions. For me personally, a good winter coat and my two moto jackets are my most worn.

Midi Dress

Aside from good shoes and a good coat/jacket, my most versatile and most recommended item would be a midi dress. I’ve extolled it over and over again as the wardrobe chameleon since you can wear it to work, church, events, and more due to the modest length and flattering shape. You can also add boots (tall or short) and a cute jacket and wear it most of the year. For this reason, I recommend a shorter sleeved one for summer and then adding layers in winter.

Good Jeans

I went more in depth into this in my investment post, so I will keep this short and sweet. A good pair of jeans is a must have and a building block to any wardrobe. I have done posts about the best skinny jeans and why you should buy high rise jeans (the secret to looking taller and skinnier!) if interested.

Basics

There are blog post after blog post about the importance of good basics like white t-shirts, stripes, etc. I won’t go into that as there are probably better more thorough posts out there. I have a great series about a casual capsule wardrobe if you are looking for some suggestions about that area. I’ll leave this post specifically about things I think you need for a classic wardrobe outside of good basics.
