What to Wear When You Don’t Know What to Wear

January 16, 2017

What to wear when you don’t know what to wear? I think this question is something all of us face from time to time. You know the feeling: standing in your closet staring at your clothes in frustration. As I mentioned in last week’s post, I have been shopping my closet more in this post-baby season of life. I did it during pregnancy too as it was a time when I had a more limited wardrobe. I’ve found myself pondering this question more and more. My answer?

What to Wear When You Don’t Know What to Wear

  1. Start with your favorite pair of jeans.
  2. Pair with a casual, neutral top – Whether a sweater, tee, or blouse, pick a neutral color or stripe you’ve always loved. One of my favorite ways to do this is to go monochrome like I did today. If you’ve picked black jeans or grey jeans, select a black or grey top. If you’ve picked regular denim, consider a stripe or even a plaid. White denim pairs really well with chambray.
  3. Add an accessory – Opt for either a scarf or a great layer like a moto jacket (my go-to recently).
  4. Finish with your favorite shoe – I almost always pick a pair of ankle booties.

Outfits like these are never complicated but always chic and effortless. Out of all the things I post, these seem to be a reader favorite. Sometimes I think I need to make every outfit something really special and unique. While there is definitely a place for those combinations, the truth is this kind of look resonates with us all.

I love the monochrome outfit, those grey jeans look amazing on you, girl! I also love the other looks you’ve shared here as well! Thanks so much for sharing, beauty, and I hope you’re having a great start to your week so far!

Such a cute look! I feel like I never have anything wear way too often, and it’s not really the case! I definitely find myself reaching for my favorite scarf or moto jacket, too! Loving those booties BTW!

These are great tips! You always have to start somewhere and if I can figure out one piece I’d like to wear, it’s much easier to build the outfit around that one piece. Love your monochrome look! That sweater is so cozy looking!

Thanks for these tips! I’ve noticed the same problem lately: I stare at my closet full of clothes and I don’t want to wear any of them sometimes! It’s frustrating but I’m trying to repurpose and clear out my closet for the new year.

Such a good template for a go-to outfit. Sometimes I get so flustered in the morning if I have no idea what to wear!

Some lovely ideas! Generally when it comes to my wardrobe it’s very simple for my day to day look, I love loungewear. When I’m going out more thought goes into my look, it really depends where I’m headed too.

Some wonderful outfit ideas when you’re stuck, I think a great pair of jeans, trousers, leggings teamed with boots, a chunky top such as a jumper, elegant scarf, and a little jacket works very nicely. Team with accessories and you’re set.

I love this, because I tend to start with a top, yet sometimes I draw a blank after that. But when I wear a great pair of jeans I always feel better, so the rest of the outfit should come pretty easily from there. Those are great jeans, and I love the cozy sweater!

I couldn’t agree more, often it really is the simply, chic, and effortless looks that resonate with me the most. Ankle booties are such a go to shoe option for me, too, especially when I don’t know what to wear. Thank you for all this great inspiration, these are awesome looks Amy!
