What to wear when you don’t know what to wear? I think this question is something all of us face from time to time. You know the feeling: standing in your closet staring at your clothes in frustration. As I mentioned in last week’s post, I have been shopping my closet more in this post-baby season of life. I did it during pregnancy too as it was a time when I had a more limited wardrobe. I’ve found myself pondering this question more and more. My answer?
What to Wear When You Don’t Know What to Wear
- Start with your favorite pair of jeans.
- Pair with a casual, neutral top – Whether a sweater, tee, or blouse, pick a neutral color or stripe you’ve always loved. One of my favorite ways to do this is to go monochrome like I did today. If you’ve picked black jeans or grey jeans, select a black or grey top. If you’ve picked regular denim, consider a stripe or even a plaid. White denim pairs really well with chambray.
- Add an accessory – Opt for either a scarf or a great layer like a moto jacket (my go-to recently).
- Finish with your favorite shoe – I almost always pick a pair of ankle booties.
Outfits like these are never complicated but always chic and effortless. Out of all the things I post, these seem to be a reader favorite. Sometimes I think I need to make every outfit something really special and unique. While there is definitely a place for those combinations, the truth is this kind of look resonates with us all.

Great tips, Amy! Sometimes I have so many choices in my closet that I don’t know where to start!!
That’s why I love that I have a theme for the blog posts—at least if we’re taking pictures, I have an object or color I need to style and it gives me something to start with!!
Love that scarf!!

Great post, Amy Ann! I, like many of your readers, also like the seemingly “simple” outfits. Even within my own wardrobe, there’s something special about having really nice basics that make you feel great! Happy Monday!

I definitely agree with this post…and I find the same to be true with my blog. In real life, most of us dress pretty simply, and I often have to remind myself that there’s nothing wrong with that. Your camel scarf is the perfect finishing touch for this look!

These kind of outfits are definetly my uniform. When I do not know what to wear it is either a jeans with an oversized top/sweater or a pencilskirt with an oversized sweater/top. Life can be so easy when you know what to wear 😀
