How to Wear Denim Culottes

February 26, 2016

Did you catch my post on Tuesday? I am on a major denim kick… but I don’t mean your average denim. I am loving all the modern silhouettes as an alternative to the skinny (which I will always love). You guys know I am a culotte fan (see recent posts here, here, here, here, here, and here), so it only makes sense that I would combine my love for denim and culottes. This pair is Citizens of Humanity via Shopbop, and they could not be more perfect. I really encourage you to try culottes. I have heard from several people that they suit me because I am tall. Here’s the thing, I think they suit everyone and are actually a very flattering cut.

How to wear Denim Culottes:

  1. It’s all about length – You need a pair that hits mid-calf. If they are longer, they do have a tendency to overwhelm shorter frames. Show some ankle! 😉
  2. Opt for a leg that isn’t too wide – This is important especially if you are on the petite side. You don’t want legs so wide they end up looking like a skirt. You do need some definition between legs when standing.
  3. Keep your waist defined – Although I have played with different lengths and fits of tops, when I first started wearing culottes, I was definitely more comfortable balancing the looser bottom with a more fitted top. Consider a more cropped fit or a slimmer top you can tuck in.
  4. Avoid pleats/zip front – Clearly on a denim pair, you probably won’t avoid a zip front, but my favorite dress pairs are my black and rust colored ones that have a hidden zipper on the side or back. in my opinion, this makes for a cleaner and more flattering line.

I adore culottes and you pull them off better than anybody I know! I absolutely love the uniqueness of the hem! Such a fresh spring outfit with a lovely flair with the floral and the boots. I hope your weekend is as gorgeous as you are!

ah! Culottes in general scare me because I don’t think I’m tall enough to pull them & then add in denim & I’m double frightened but somehow you pull them off!

I really need to look for a pair of these when I go outlet shopping soon. You always style them nicely. I think it’ll be fun to have a pair when it starts to warm up, but you styled this outfit for the winter perfectly!

So there may actually be hope for those of us on the shorter side of the height spectrum 🙂 I do agree, though, that it’s all a matter of proportions and it’s especially tricky with something typically more voluminous than your average pants. I remain optimistic. I shall continue my hunt. I love yours on you, beautifully cut and flattering xoxo

So you’ve convinced me that I need a pair of these… I really love the look with the boots you’re wearing (so I need a pair of those too, haha!). I’ve been reluctant, but every time I see a pair, I love the style a little more. I think you look incredible!

These are some fantastic tips to style denim culottes. My biggest concern is length & finding something that doesn’t cut my legs off horribly. I love yours with the funky cool shirt. :]
