Black Tie

April 10, 2015
Remember that time I wore a Forever21 jumpsuit I bought on sale for $20 to a black tie event?
I mentioned last week that Russ and I were invited to a black tie event for his work. It was my first time at such a dressy outing, so of course I was excited/nervous about finding something to wear. I’m not the best in social situations (hello introvert). I figured I at least needed to get the outfit right, so I wouldn’t embarrass my husband too much. I thought I might as well wear a long dress while I had the chance. It’s not every week a girl gets to wear a floor length gown! I didn’t want to pay a ton for something I would only wear once though, so I ordered one from Rent the Runway and anxiously awaited its arrival. The process is really neat. Basically you order one size and get a back up size for free. Each dress has a ton of reviews from people who have rented it, so you can see how it runs. My girl Mary-Katherine from Gold-Hatted Lover had recently shared a good experience, so I just went for it. My dress came in the mail on time and fit perfectly size wise. However, despite ordering the long length, it was too short. Rent the Runway has amazing customer service. They refunded my money and told me that the long is really for 5’7”-5’10”. I’m 5’10”….live and learn. They do have some extra long length dresses though, so if I ever have the chance, I’ll definitely order from them again. That was a long story to explain how it happened. In the end, I was super comfortable and so happy I wore my jumpsuit instead of rushing around trying to find another fancy dress. The moral of the story? I think every woman needs a black jumpsuit in her closet. It’s the style chameleon.
Also, thanks to everyone for your support and kind words from Wednesday’s announcement. I am really excited about the future of this blog as Straight A Style.

What a steal with that jumpsuit! You looked perfect for such an event! I have a few fancy events coming up and I’m nervous about what to wear, but I’ll definitely have to check F21 to see if I can find any steals like you! πŸ™‚

You look beautiful Amy Ann! You definitely had to have made your husband proud at his event. I’m a big fan of Rent the Runway and there fun styles. I love that you can get back up sizes and even a back up dress for a fraction of the cost. Hopefully you had a great time!

That’s such a bummer. I hate when that happens! I love that jumpsuit though! They really can be super fancy or casual. I love the new name of your blog!

Wow, you certainly look elegant, so mission accomplished!! Awesome too that it’s was such an affordable option…no one would even know!! Reminds me of a funny story my sister has…she went to a fancy East Coast wedding years ago and happened to have found a beautiful black lace dress at Target…she kept getting compliments on the dress and people would ask her who her “designer” was. She was like “um, Missomo”…lol!!!!!! These examples just further the point that fashion/style doesn’t have to be expensive! πŸ™‚

So exciting you are going to a black tie event!! Love how you picked a jumpsuit instead of a cocktail dress. You seriously look stunning in it! I’m the same way and get awkward around social situation haha. I’m sure you’ll have a fantastic time!

That black jumpsuit is stunning on you, perfect for a black tie event! Such a shame the dress didn’t work out, but at least you know for future so you can ask for the measurements beforehand πŸ™‚

I have the opposite problem – I’m so short most dresses are too long on me, haha!
