Over the years I have collected several of the internet famous J.Crew wool coats around this time of year when they are typically on major sale. I’m talking 50-60% off or more. I believe one year I paid just $90 for one when they are regularly $375 full price. Since I now have three, I thought I would do a J.Crew Cocoon and Chateau Parka Coat review. Hopefully this will be helpful if you are in the market.
J.Crew Cocoon and Chateau Parka Coat Review
What I love about these coats in general is that they are dressy enough to be worn with dresses and work wear looks and also casual enough to be worn with jeans. They quality is really nice, and they are lined. Warmth factor is definitely there though probably not the warmest coats you can find. Definitely warm enough for Oklahoma winters.
Cocoon Coat – $365
First up is the J.Crew Cocoon Coat. I have it in both the “sandstone” pictured below and this amazing red (last seen here). I was so sad they did not bring back this year. If you are in the market for the red color, it is available in their Lodge Coat which is super similar. Here are the features of the coat and some sizing details.
- Double pockets on one side, single on the other
- Zip front
- Standing collar
- In my opinion, it runs large. I recommend sizing down one. I typically wear a 2-4 depending on the cut/sizing of the item. Below you can see I have on a 2 in the red and a 0 in the sandstone. I prefer how the sandstone fits, and I think you can tell the difference in the photos below. That being said, I also don’t bundle a ton underneath my coats. Usually a thick sweater at most.
Chateau Parka – $375
Nextup is the J.Crew Chateau Parka. I have it in both the “Hthr Dusk” pictured below. Due to the hood and pocket styling, it has a slightly more casual feel to me. Here are the features of the coat and some sizing details.
- Button front pockets
- Zip front
- Hood with removable faux fur trim
- Swingy, A-line shape
- In my opinion, it runs large. This one feels even roomier than the cocoon coat due to the swingy style cut of it. I recommend sizing down one unless you plan to wear bulky sweaters/multiple layers underneath most of the time. I am wearing a size 2, and I wish I had a 0. All of my coats were purchased online at the end of the season on major sale as I mentioned. When I got them, there were no other sizes available.
J.Crew Cocoon vs Chateau Parka Coat
Soooo are you trying to decide J.Crew cocoon coat vs the Chateau Parka coat? If you are just getting one, I would recommend the cocoon coat just because it is a little dressier and you can dress it up or down. Unless you live in a climate were a hood would be really beneficial. Honestly, both coats are great! Pick a neutral color you can wear with everything, buy on sale, and you won’t regret it!
