I love my puffer vests! They make such a good, easy layer. Plus, they add warmth and interest to any outfit. I have both the black and the pink version from Old Navy. There are all kinds of variations and brands to buy, but I have found the Old Navy puffer vest to be affordable and good quality. I’ve had both of mine for a couple of years. I have the XS in both. I find they run true to size to a little large. Today I wanted to share a couple tips on how to style puffer vests.
- The only major DO NOT when considering how to style a puffer vest is adding them over a large, bulky sweater or sweatshirt that might have dolman style sleeves or a super chunky knit/arms. When you already have a chunky fabric to start with, adding a puffy layer on top will not be a flattering option.
Style a Puffer Vest with a Button Up Shirt Underneath
When considering how to style a puffer vest, probably my favorite way is putting a button up shirt underneath, particularly a flannel or plaid. Button up shirts are my go to and such a wardrobe staple for me. This is a way to mix them up and get even more wear out of your favorites. See below for three ways I have styled mine. One with combat boots, one with dressier boots, and one with sneakers.

Style with a Long Sleeve Shirt
I love taking a basic white t-shirt or a thermal type shirt like my Splendid thermal below and making it feel more special with a vest. You can wear a solid or a printed shirt, either will look great. In this case, I recommend sneakers or wedge sneakers since your overall look is more casual.

Style with Jogger or Legging
Are you a stay at home mom, working from home, or some combination of both like me? Swap your jeans for joggers or leggings and create a super comfy athleisure look. Your puffer vest elevates your leggings or joggers to the next level but still feels so comfy. You can wear a sweatshirt underneath like I have here as long as it is a more fitted one (for example, I wouldn’t wear one of my oversized sweatshirts I wold wear along over leggings), a longer tunic style t-shirt or top to cover your bottom, or really anything you want. Just keep in mind my main do not mentioned at the top of the post.

I’ve been thinking about getting a puffer vest! Do you find the Old Navy ones work well for layering under jackets, or do they tend to bunch up? Also curious if the pink shows stains easily – I’m worried about that with lighter colors. Great tip about sizing true to size!

I’ve been eyeing a puffer vest for layering too! Love that you’ve had yours for a couple years—that’s great proof they hold up. Did you find one color easier to style than the other? I’m torn between neutral and something with more personality like your pink!
