Realistic Healthy Habits with Carbon 38

December 23, 2015

I used to be about 30 pounds heavier than I am now, so while I will not pretend to be a fitness freak in this post, I have found some realistic healthy habits that help me be my best self. It’s the end of the holiday season, close to the start of a new year. Fitness and health are topics heavy on most people’s minds. I believe in balance, not deprivation. You’ll often catch me with a green smoothie after an indulgent date night which is exactly what happened in these photos. I’m excited to be teaming up with Carbon 38 and the Blogger Nation girls to share some fun workout gear and healthy rules I live by.

Realistic Healthy Habits

  1. Plan to Cook at Home – I love to cook. My diet is soooo much better when I plan a healthy meal where I can control the ingredients and portion size. If I don’t have a meal planned, chances are we are grabbing something much less healthy and higher calorie. Additionally, if I have a meal planned and shopped for, I feel like I have to make it. It’s much harder to go through a drive through when I know I’d be wasting food at home. I keep it simple during the week and use the crock pot a lot.
  2. Bring Your Lunch to Work – When Russ and I first got married, I cooked at home but not always in a healthy way. We also ate out on our lunch breaks a lot. Not only was it more expensive, it was also way less healthy. We bring our lunch every day. Having that routine in place really helps me. If I eat a healthy breakfast and lunch, I don’t stress out about having a treat or a dinner out occasionally.
  3. Wear Fun Workout Gear – I think this goes without saying for a fashion lover like me, but if I have something fun to put on I am way more motivated to get active. Today I am wearing the leopard print legging and wrap jacket from Carbon38. These are both such good quality pieces. And hello, leopard print? So fun. The jacket has fleece lined sleeves, so it’s extra warm for a winter workout.
  4. Find a Buddy – Don’t ask me how many times I have actually used the treadmill we bought on Craig’s List. I’d much rather talk about weekly walks with a great friend who lives close by. It’s so much easier for me to make a date and get outside.
  5. Make Smart Decisions at the Grocery Store – I seriously have no willpower. It is not a trait I am proud of, but acknowledging it helps me make smarter choices at the grocery store. It’s where my willpower starts. We try to only keep healthy snacks in our house. Think Greek yogurt, almonds, fruit, etc. If I don’t have it, I don’t eat it. We also only buy what we need. Making a list and sticking to it helps us not waste food and buy things we are tempted by while shopping.
  6. Walk – Take the stairs, park farther away, take a lap around your building in the afternoon, or any other thing that will add some steps to your day. While you will not find me running miles each day, I’m a firm believer in taking the stairs to my third floor office.

Such great tips! I am totally with you on bringing lunch to work. I feel like I really pack on the pounds when I have lunch out. Love those pants on you!

Love all these tips! So very true. I do them all except for wearing fun workout gear and finding a buddy. I can’t workout with other people. It’s just something I can’t do. I like exercising by myself, it helps me destress way more. Also, for some reason I don’t exactly wear fun workout clothes. I do wear fun brightly colored workout clothes, but the styles aren’t that great. Hahaha whenever I go shopping, I generally veer towards street clothes over workout clothes. Maybe I should make expanding my workout wardrobe my goal?

I work out about 5x a week and I am always looking for fun workout gear! Those pants and the jacket are so pretty, yet aren’t too busy! I am going to check out this company! I try to cook 5 meals a week and then we do our eating out on the weekend. The weekend is when I relax a bit on what I eat and I usually enjoy a Starbucks!

You look fantastic, and loving those pants! Great realistic tips, I’m a big proponent of bringing your own lunch to work and planning to cook at home. Once both of those become a habit, it’s so much easier. Merry Christmas Eve-Eve <3

Wow, congrats on your weight loss and keeping it off, Amy! I know it’s not easy, I too lost roughly 25lbs about 10 years ago. I will say that the beginning stages are the hardest, as you begin to adapt to the changes in your diet and lifestyle. With that, I’ve found that all of what you’ve mentioned in your tips have helped me throughout the years, so you’re spot on! I also love those leggings, so cute! I try and wear cute workout clothes, with bright colors or prints because it just helps to boost my energy and like you said, gets me motivated. Nothing can make you look forward to going to the gym or for a run then getting a new workout outfit or sneakers!

Thanks so much for sharing, you look amazing 🙂 I hope you had a wonderful day!

Thanks for sharing your healthy habits! I’ve actually gained weight in the past year and I’m probably heavier than I’ve ever been. My downfall is sweets. I need something sweet after every meal. I seriously need to get my life. I did purchase some work out gear and I just need to get in it and get to working out. You look fabulous by the way!

Ha! Honestly it was just applying the principles I mentioned after eating terribly in college. It was a slow process, but I’ve been this weight for several years now.

Great list! I’m about to click on your Weight Loss Story/Before and After link bc that’s fascinating! I had no idea. So many people make this stuff about deprivation, but balance is really best. And I think for doing it to be healthy and not just for appearances also helps with long term stuff. I love the pants! It’s funny bc I agree that most fashionistas flock to fun workout gear and that having fun work out clothes is more inspiring, but I also wear old shorts and shirts from college to the gym a lot haha!
